Dear Parents and Students,
I would like to start by welcoming you to the fourth grade at Dilworth School. My name is Mrs. Barkve and this is my elventh year teaching at Dilworth. I hope you had a wonderful summer and are ready to begin an exciting and challenging school year.  I am looking forward to working with all of you (some of you for a second year)!

During the first few days of school we will be very busy getting to know each other, writing, establishing daily procedures, and creating a positive classroom environment.  Students will maintain weekly homework logs/planner and folders to help them keep their work organized.  Please check the homework log/planner each evening.

Homework will be assigned Monday though Thursday and will be reinforcing and extending the classroom lessons.   I expect all assignments to be completed and turned in on time.  Long-term projects will be announced well in advance of the due date.  In addition to nightly homework I feel that it is very important for students to read every night.  They should be reading at least 20 minutes every night in order to increase fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary.

Donations of Kleenex, paper towels, post-it-notes and any other classroom supplies would be appreciated throughout the year.  Please check the classroom door wish list for items that we may need throughout the school year.

The weekly folder will come home on Fridays with your child’s work and other notices.  Review the work with your child, sign, and return the folder on Monday.  Please feel free to enclose a note in the folder with any comments or questions.

Fourth graders will be going to P.E. twice a week with a PE coach and should wear appropriate clothing and shoes on that day (Monday and Tuesday for our class).

Students will also be receiving National Geographic Explorer 7 times throughout the year to reinforce non-fiction literacy skills.  If you can, please send in a donation (cash or a check made out to “Jessica Barkve” in the amount of $10) to cover the cost of the subscription, and other classroom supplies.  We appreciate your support!

This will be a fun and challenging year and I can’t wait to get started working with your children.  I look forward to meeting you all at Back To School Night on Tuesday, August 27, 2013 from 7:15-8:00.

Sincerely,
Jessica Barkve
